Career

Steven earned a Master’s Degree in Administration in Elementary Education from Providence College and has been an educator for seven years, teaching in the Westerly School District from 2004-2009 before becoming Principal at the Ashaway Elementary School. Under Steven’s leadership Ashaway went from 42% proficiency in science to 75% proficiency in just one year. He has worked to develop a professional learning community focusing specifically on math and reading and in just three months established a school data wall which provides a matrix of data analysis of NECAP and student work. Steven recognizes five students per day for their good deeds while building a unified focus on positive behavior at the school. His work in creating a productive, professional learning community and working collaboratively with others in developing data driven instructional practices has set him apart and the Rhode Island Association of School Principals recognized Steven as its 2009-2010 Outstanding First Year Principal.

Community
Steven helped start a school garden producing 52 pounds of food, which was donated to a local shelter. In collaboration with the University of Rhode Island and GEMSNET, Steven has worked to increase student achievement in science.
