Dining Out

Winter Water Views

Scenic beauty for all seasons

If you haven’t been to George’s of Galilee since it was renovated, you’re probably surprised to see it listed here. The signature chowder and clam cakes hardly seem romantic. But this waterfront restaurant now has a warmly lit main dining room on the first level and a handsome working fireplace. On February 14, a special Valentine’s menu will include local wild oysters on the half shell, green mango and cashew salad with prawns and lemongrass vinaigrette, char-grilled pork chop with dried cranberry and port reduction sauce, and decadent chocolate-dipped strawberries with caramel whipped cream for dessert. George’s chowder and clam cakes can wait until summer.

That legendary aphrodisiac, the oyster, takes center stage at this refined seafood shack with its humble wooden tables and chairs. The oysters come from a variety of Rhode Island oyster farms, including one in Potter Pond right off the deck at the wildly popular Matunuck Oyster Bar. It’s romantic in a slightly kinky way to gather round the raw bar and watch the shuckers in action. There’s a lot more than oysters on the locally sourced menu, from jambalaya to penne pesto. And it all goes so well with a glass of wine or a craft beer, especially at one of the prized waterfront tables where you can watch the moonlight dance upon the pond.

With its massive bar, captain’s chair bar stools, wood paneling and red and black checkered floor, some might wonder how romantic can Twin Willows be? But for couples who fell in love while attending the University of Rhode Island, Twin Willows will always be that special place. The extensive menu has come a long way over the years, far beyond the nachos and burgers of your youth. All grown up now, you might prefer the Drunken Lobster Penne in a pink vodka sauce or the Steak Gorgonzola as more sophisticated options.
