ChocoLoco Doubles as Sweet Cafe and Health Hot Spot

A Kingston creperie serves up creative sweet and savory fare

Comfort food takes the shape of super thin pancakes at ChocoLoco, Kingston’s newest creperie and waffle bar, where these French delicacies can be found stuffed with everything from Nutella to cheesecake filling, and even savory Mediterranean flavors.

“Since my childhood – which I spent most of in Lebanon – crepes have always been my favorite,” shares owner Joseph Tohme. “I moved to France and I fell even more in love with them.” Tohme brings his travels and many years of experience in the food industry to this Kingston Emporium cafe – a destination for those with a sweet tooth. Crowd pleasers include Honey Apple Pie crepes (with warm apples and Cinnamon Toast Crunch), the inventive Chocoloco “Fettuccine” served sliced into ribbons with three types of chocolate, and Waffle Ice Cream Sandwiches, which is as decadent as the name suggests.

Served alongside these indulgences is plenty of fare for the health conscious, too, like cold pressed juices – a favorite among URI students – with immunity and antioxidant boosts. Acai bowls are all made with almond or coconut milk and come in plenty of colorful, fruit-forward varieties. “You can always add a vegan protein scoop, flax seeds, hemp seeds, and chia seeds for even more nutrients,” says Tohme. Gluten-free diet? There’s plenty of crepe options for that, too.

Having opened this spring, Tohme shares ChocoLoco faced its fair share of challenges, from inventory shortages to staffing, but never compromised their dedication to quality and creative offerings. With plans to roll out a catering menu soon, he notes, “so far we have been blessed.”
