WSO - *Free* POP-UP Concert: Washington County Fairgrounds

With funding provided by BankNewport and BankRI, on Saturday – June 10, 2023 (5pm), the Warwick Symphony Orchestra will present a free orchestral pops performance at the Washington County Fairgrounds, with special guests, the Westminster Youth String Ensemble. With a rain-date of Sunday – June 11, 2023, the program will include:

This outdoor event is family friendly, ADA-accessible (with covered wheel-in pavilion for wheelchair access), and picnics are encouraged. (Optional) Donations will collected on site for the benefit of Hasbro Children’s Hospital – Arts & Enrichment Programming.

MORE about WESTMINSTER YOUTH STRING ENSEMBLE

Based in Westerly, RI – Westminster Youth String Ensemble supports young musicians (ages 6-18) in listening, learning, rehearsing, and performing music together. With instruction on orchestral string instruments, they offer three levels of musical ensemble under the direction of Kathleen Curran Monroe and a group of mentors/artists-in-residence who foster their orchestral foundation through weekly rehearsals and frequent performances. Established in 2014, WYSE provides a high-quality string music performance experience for promising young musicians from the Southern Rhode Island and Southeastern Connecticut and includes a scholarship program with financial assistance for tuition, private lessons and instrumental rental fees.

Who is the WSO?

The WSO brings classical and orchestral pops performances to communities across Rhode Island. As a regional volunteer touring symphony, the WSO seeks to deliver high-quality live music and affordable performances to diverse communities. WSO ensures accessibility and appeals to a wide-ranging audience of varied backgrounds through programming that seamlessly between classical and orchestral pops programs. Established in 1966 by George Low as a continuing education opportunity through the Warwick Public Schools, the WSO is a non-profit regional orchestra with a diverse membership. Catherine Gagnon is WSO’s fifth Music Director, and under her guidance, the WSO presents about eight concerts annually. With programs offered in a variety of settings and at affordable prices, WSO presents music representing the changing interests of our community including pops selections, the music of film and Broadway, popular works, and traditional orchestral repertoire. WSO strives to balance concerts with pieces that are recognizable along with those that can develop our audience’s understanding of and appreciation for classical and contemporary music.
