A brewery anniversary could call for cake, but Grey Sail went with a new IPA instead. The Westerly brewery marks 15 years this fall, tracing the milestone back to November 11, 2011, when it tapped its first keg. Since then, Grey Sail has poured plenty of beer while also showing up for community cleanups, fundraisers, and organizations across Southern Rhode Island.
Its anniversary release plays directly into that history. Middle Child IPA brings together Captain’s Daughter Double IPA and Little Sister Session IPA in one bright, juicy beer with a smooth finish. The normally taproom-focused release gets a wider run for the celebration. Co-owner Jen Brinton compares the addition to getting the whole family under one roof, a fitting sentiment for a brewery using its birthday to bring old favorites and something new to the same table.
And Middle Child isn’t celebrating alone. Two beers that already know their way around a Grey Sail fall are back in the lineup.
Headless Oarsman Pumpkin Ale
October at Grey Sail would feel noticeably less spooky without Headless Oarsman. Inspired by Sleepy Hollow, the returning pumpkin ale starts with a rich, malty base and folds in pumpkin spice puree, cinnamon, and clove. It lands firmly in fall territory without tasting like the dessert table.
Autumn Winds Fest Beer
Pumpkin gets plenty of attention this time of year, but Autumn Winds takes another route. The malt-forward fest lager brings rich, toasty flavors and balanced sweetness to the anniversary lineup, making it a natural lead-in to Grey Sail’s Oktoberfest festivities.
Oktoberfest Brings the Party to the Taproom
Grey Sail carries the celebration into Sunday, October 11 from noon to 8 p.m. with German beer, fall-inspired cocktails, and live music from The Vagabonds. A steinholding competition rewards a steady grip, while the yodeling contest asks for a slightly different kind of confidence. Guests can also pick up a Grey Sail stein for the occasion.
