We sample several takes on a local favorite: the spinach pie
PJ's Pub These spinach pies were Greek-style, meaning that instead of fluffy pizza dough, the spinach was contained within thin layers of flaky phyllo dough. Each pie was bursting with flavor: We tasted olive oil, egg, onions, garlic, and a mixture of ricotta and feta cheeses. They were so moist and oh so delicious – completely worth the calorie splurge when going back for seconds. 135 Boon Street, Narragansett. 789-3200
Pier Pizza First off, we were blown away by the generous portions of these calzone-like spinach pies. With lots of soft, fluffy dough and moist spinach filling, our staffers raved over the generous amounts of ricotta cheese that we tasted. The spinach pies are served with marinara dipping sauce so that tomato lovers can dunk their crusts for an added treat. 328 Main Street, Wakefield. 788-8181
PD's Pizza These spinach pies looked like puffy baked apple pies at first glance, with their nicely browned crusts just begging to be torn into. Once we did, we unearthed moist spinach, tomato and pepperoni. The dish was dusted with parmesan cheese and served with a red pepper tomato dipping sauce, which added a nice kick to the fluffy dough. 1202 Kingstown Road, Wakefield. 789-0000
Calvitto’s Pizza and Bakery This was the most traditional of all the spinach pies, with just two main ingredients: dough and spinach. It was light, clean and refreshing. One staffer noted, “You don’t feel like you have to go take a nap after you eat this one.” There was plenty of moist spinach inside the dough, which was soft and simple. 90 Point Judith Road, Narragansett. 783-8086
