G Pub Takes Game Day into Overtime

Football, drink specials, local DJs, and late-night $1 slices keep the action going well beyond kickoff in downtown Providence

Posted

Some Providence nights require a game plan. At G Pub, that might mean claiming a spot for kickoff, ordering wings, sticking around for a DJ set, and realizing sometime after 11PM that a $1 slice of pizza sounds exactly right.

The game comes first. More than 20 TVs fill the downtown Providence hangout, where NFL matchups take over Sundays, Mondays, and Thursdays, with college football in the mix on Saturdays. With that many screens, fans following different teams don’t necessarily have to compete for the remote.

If the matchup you want isn’t showing nearby, General Manager Sandro DaCruz and Restaurant Manager John Ioven encourage guests to ask. They can switch a TV to another game and, when possible, adjust the sound around that screen. It’s a small touch that saves anyone from spending three quarters checking the score on their phone.

Food and drink specials change with the football schedule. Sundays bring 10 new wing flavors alongside $20 buckets of Rhode Island’s own Chair 2 lager. Monday Night Football is all about “Yuengs and Wings,” with half-off wings and $4 Yuengling. Then on Thursdays, the lineup shifts to $7 rails, with all rail liquor pours priced at $7 for the night.

On Fridays and Saturdays, the focus shifts as the evening goes on. Local DJs take over beginning at 9:30PM, playing through a new sound system designed by Phil Paulicelli of Soundz Organic. September’s lineup includes D-Wun, Primitive, Phat Matt, and Big Show.

The pool hall and game room offer something to do when attention starts drifting from the TVs, and after 11PM on Friday and Saturday nights, another late-night staple enters the picture. G Pub serves $1 pizza slices until they sell out.

The result is a place where plans can loosen up as the hours pass. A game can turn into another round, a trip to the pool table, a DJ set, and eventually that dollar slice you weren’t thinking about at kickoff.
