'Alarming video' shows patient abuse at Rhode Island state hospital, group alleges

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A disability rights group is alleging patient abuse in the psychiatric wing of the Rhode Island state hospital following the release of a video showing correctional officers doing a contraband search and stepping over a man who was "in apparent distress."

The patient was "lying on the floor, in apparent distress, wearing no clothing other than boxer shorts and socks," wrote Morna A. Murray, executive director of Disability Rights Rhode Island, in a letter to the state agency that runs Eleanor Slater Hospital.

"Twelve (Department of Corrections) officers, one after the other, step over the petite-framed, older male patient with no apparent regard for his safety or human dignity," the letter continued.
