Last year, Welcome House served 18,000 meals to hungry people in South County. Some were homeless. Others had issues with substance abuse. Whoever they were, whatever their circumstances, Welcome House provided food and recouperation, thanks to its 17-bed shelter.
Now they’re getting a boost from local restaurant owners, who have been raising funds and making donations to Welcome House. Sponsors include Aunt Carrie’s Seafood, George’s of Galilee, Matunuck Oyster Bar, Mews Tavern, Monahan’s Clam Shack by the Sea, Ocean Mist, Phil’s Main Street Grille, Spain of Narragansett, and Two Ten Oyster Bar and Grill.
“Many people think of South County as a tourist destination, with its beachfront summer homes and renowned restaurants, but are unaware of the acute hunger and homelessness that also exist here,” said Allison Martinez, Welcome House’s director. “Our area’s high cost of living has more and more people struggling with basic needs like food and shelter.”
Welcome House celebrated the new sponsorship program with a banner over the front door, thanking each restaurant. To add to this stone soup, visit WelcomeHouseOfSouthCounty.org
