The Newport Tree Conservancy (NTC) is organizing a volunteer tree-planting event at Miantonomi Park on October 25th & 26th to help restore the city’s largest forest. Volunteers are needed to help reach the goal of planting 100 trees.
Invasive species like English oak and Japanese knotweed now cover 80% of the park’s mature forest. Over the last seven years, the NTC and Newport Public Services Department have been working to control these species.
NTC has secured funding to reforest a half-acre section, with more than 300 native trees already planted. Community volunteers are key to these efforts, with growing participation each year.
