Scarecrow Contest Returns to Wickford Village

Hey Rhody’s Elyse Major among the judges during this year’s Spooky Sip and Stroll

On Thursday October 27, 202 during the Wickford Village Spooky Sip and Stroll, Lori Lyons will be walking around some local personalities, including Elyse Major, editor-in-chief at Providence Media, publishers of Hey Rhody, So Rhode Island, Providence Monthly, and The Bay Magazine; The Rhode Show’s Ashley Erling; and food and lifestyle blogger Patty Jeffrey of PattyJ.com. The reason? The trio will serve as judges at the return of the village’s Scarecrow Contest.

“It’s been a few years,” begins Lyons, referencing the event. Lyons, who also runs the social media accounts I Love Wickford Village, put out a flier to her merchant neighbors about the resurgence of the popular Wicked Week contest, announcing there would be four categories; creepy, cool, creative, and colorful, and was pleasantly surprised at the response of businesses getting in the spirit.

“It’s really something to see. Everyone’s [scarecrow] masterpiece is so different and clever,” says Lyons. “Between the Witches Paddle, our Horribles Parade, Tim Cranston’s admired Cemetery Tour, the beautiful waterfront decorated with pumpkins, cornstalks and mums, and lastly, all of our unique and fun events, we’ve got Salem beat. It’s safe and family-friendly but a great place for a date night as well. And so pretty this time of year.”

Other Sip and Stroll highlights include the Wickford harbor aglow with flaming lanterns, extended hours at shops, live performances on the steps of Old Library, and offerings from Gooseneck Vineyards. “We love watching families go from shop to shop to see all the scary and silly creations. It’s no wonder that USA Today named Wickford 'Best Historic Small Town'!” says Lyons.
