Rhody Pets: A Wakefield Non-Profit Hosts Series of Pet Adoption Events

Save One Soul seeks to connect rescue dogs with a furr-ever home

Posted

The name may be Save One Soul (SOS) Animal Rescue League, but since its founding in 2014, this dynamic South County rescue has actually saved over 4,000 furry souls! It’s a remarkable accomplishment, but, as adoption counselor Trisha Hlastawa explains, their challenges are also numerous.

“Our partner rescues in southern states are at a crisis point with unprecedented numbers of animals desperately in need of shelter and care,” says Hlastawa. “There are so many truly great dogs of all ages and sizes, and we are determined to find them loving homes in Rhode Island.”

A nonprofit group of dedicated volunteers enlisting the help of community partners and folks eager to open up their home to a foster dog companion, SOS’s mission is centered around finding permanent homes for abandoned and at-risk pets. With a notable reduction in adoption applications recently even as more pups come in, they’re sending out an SOS for households who can be a safe harbor for these pooches in need.

Here are some of the ways you can get up close and paw-sonal with SOS dogs (in their signature red bandanas) this month:

FERRY TO NEWPORT

If you’ve been waiting for the summer crowds to sail away from Newport, this is the ideal date to head over the bridge. SOS is holding a mini adoption event at The Black Dog General Store, with 20 percent of all sales going to the rescue – a great chance to stock up on gifts for your dog-loving friends. Plus, spend $100 or more, and you’ll be entered into a raffle to win a goodie-filled tote. 33 Bannister’s Wharf, September 10, 11am-3pm

ZOOM IN

Enjoy five minutes of screentime with adoptable dogs via Zoom appearances in their current foster homes. This Virtual Adoption Event is a great way to get real insight into how they would behave in your own home. Potential adopters are also welcome to ask questions. September 13, 7-8pm

SHOP YOUR SUPPORT

Head to the SOS re:TAIL store in Wakefield to meet wagging tails galore, and while you’re there, shop their selection of indulgent treats. An extension of the SOS non-profit, the shop donates 100 percent of its profits toward supporting homeless animals. Favorite items include decorative leashes and yummy artisan yogurt to cool off on these remaining dog days of summer. If you’re bringing home a new pup, why not offer the traditional Rhode Island welcome symbol of a pineapple in the form of a squeaky toy? 577 Kingstown Road, September 24, 10am-12pm
