The local beer boom also includes another South County brewery – Proclamation Ale Company. The West Kingston suds factory opened late last year, with two releases: Tendril, which owner and brewmaster Dave Witham describes as a “one and a half times IPA,” and Zzzlumber, a “Dutch Imperial Stout.” Tendril is available to the public right now, but Zzzlumber needs to spend the summer aging in whiskey barrels before it will be ready for its debut.
Though Proclamation has only been open for a couple of months, Dave has had years of brewing experience. “It’s sort of the cliché story,” he says. “I got a homebrew kit for my wedding about five and a half years ago, and whenever I get into anything, I go completely bonkers – I don’t dabble. I get obsessed, I guess.”
The brewery is open most Saturdays for tours, tastings and growler sales. But, if you’d prefer a little less driving with your drinking, there are plenty of places locally to try Tendril, like What Cheer Tavern, Rogue Island, The Scurvy Dog, Doherty’s Ale House and Doherty’s East Avenue.
