Though the setting may be your kitchen table, the morning ritual of a cup of coffee has the power to transport – or at least, that’s what Kristin Jahne had in mind when devising La Belle Peche. Ethically grown single-origin beans are sourced from small fair trade farms across the globe, and then roasted to perfection right here in Rhode Island. “Some favorites include Papua New Guinea, a rich and chocolatey dream, and Costa Rica, a bright and floral experience,” Jahne shares.
Jahne’s own kitchen is where the idea for the coffee business struck. “Years ago, a friend brought over some fresh coffee beans he’d roasted at home. It was unlike anything I ever had before and I was instantly hooked.” Starting on the stovetop with an old pot, she relays that the process was a “smoky mess but produced delicious coffee.” In 2021, she upgraded to a small half-pound electric roaster, testing and perfecting her brews, and by 2022, La Belle Peche was born – and Jahne made the leap to a bigger electric roaster increasing production five times, while still maintaining consistent products.
A local following flocks to places like Wildwood Nursery in East Greenwich, Emma Acres in Exeter, Shickasheen Farm in West Kingston, and The Guild in Pawtucket, where La Belle Peche has been known to pop up, but soon Jahne is expanding with her own cafe in Cranston. With plans to open early this year, Café Sospeso brings a zero-waste mission, and will feature a walk-up espresso counter, classic Italian beverages, and baked goods. “All coffee beans will be roasted on site and brewed fresh to allow for a delicious and authentic cafe experience,” says Jahne.
Named for the Italian tradition of passing on acts of kindness, Café Sospeso (which translates to suspended coffee), follows a “a pay-it-forward method of buying a cup of coffee for a stranger. Anyone can cash in the free cup – no questions, no judgements, no stigmas,” explains Jahne. “I’m absolutely ecstatic because this has been a dream in the making for over a decade!” Follow @labellepeche_coffee for updates and pop-ups, or visit LaBellePeche.com.
