The Public’s Radio reporter dishes on savoring his South County beat

Posted

Have you always lived in Rhode Island? If not, what brought you here?

I grew up in Farmington, Connecticut. I first moved to Rhode Island in 2004 to attend Rhode Island College. My wife and I moved to Westerly in 2014 after visiting the town and loving it.

What led you to pursue a career in journalism/broadcasting?

When I was in college, I rented the movie “The Insider” about a 60 Minutes investigation into the tobacco industry. I thought, “Being a journalist looks awesome!” So I applied for an internship at The Public’s Radio (then known as WRNI) and the rest is history.

You cover the South County beat. What do you like best about being part of this community?

South County is a very small world. Each town is the type of place where people know each other, are aware of the issues in their community, and really care. Because of this, people are very engaged with the subjects I write about, which is probably the most rewarding thing for a journalist.

What are your favorite local small businesses to dine, shop, and have fun?

I spend a lot of my time at Westerly Library & Wilcox Park. I also love Stick + Fin coffeehouse, Savoy Bookshop & Cafe, Pompelmo Gelateria, Rhode Island Surf Co., Malted Barley, Thai Corner Cafe, Cooked Goose, Mews Tavern, Matunuck Oyster Bar, Ocean State Job Lot, Wakefield Running Company, the Ocean Community YMCA, Rock Spot Climbing, Westerly Land Trust trails, Joyce’s Everyday Gourmet, and Dave’s Coffee, to name a few places. I’m also very excited about the opening of The United Theatre in downtown Westerly, where The Public’s Radio will have our South County Bureau.

When you're not writing/reporting what are your interests?

I enjoy reading a lot (a mix of fiction and non-fiction), cooking, and going on walks with my family. I’ve also been working hard the last year-and-a-half to improve my Portuguese speaking. My dad’s family is from Madeira island, and my wife and I are visiting Portugal next year.
