Whether visiting for a hearty brunch or drinks on the rooftop, Phil’s Main Street Grille is the definition of cozy neighborhood diner. It’s a Wakefield staple known for their friendly service, and owner Kenneth Tetzner shares one of their points of pride: all meats and poultry served are smoked or grilled in house.
So when visiting with family one busy morning, we knew we were in for a treat. Our host Kelly warmly greeted us at the door and invited us to sit anywhere we liked. This was just the beginning of pleasantly difficult choices to make, as Phil’s is all about options, catering to a variety of guest experiences for all different diners.
The first floor is a diner-style joint filled with comfy booths, tables and chairs, and a TV for a casual, welcoming vibe. Upstairs you will find the rooftop, a perfect space for enjoying summer views of the town’s strip while sipping refreshments from the bar.
In the mood for a classic breakfast (which is served all day), we settled into a table on the first floor and dug into the expansive menu of sweet and savory dishes. Thankfully, our server was patient with me as I tried to decide and recommended a few favorites.
I went with the Pulled Pork Benny. This decadent egg dish arrived with scallions sprinkled over a steaming helping of barbecue pulled pork. Sweet yet smoky barbecue sauce was drizzled over the egg and melted cheese. As I dug in, I was happy to discover a jalapeño cheddar cornbread underneath, which added a nice kick of spice. Lightly seasoned home fries on the side are delicious dipped in hot sauce – or for scraping up any leftovers on your plate. The Pulled Pork Benny is a masterpiece of smoked meats.
Next up, I tried the Breakfast Burrito Wrap, a great vegetarian option. It’s packed with beans, cheddar cheese, scrambled eggs, and guacamole, with the side of home fries making a reappearance. For protein, you can add house-smoked chicken.
Not to be overlooked is a classic breakfast choice. My niece ordered the #6: ribeye steak, eggs with cheese, and toast. While Phil’s doesn’t hold back when it comes to leveled up breakfast food, entrees like this are all about familiarity and making the customer happy with eggs and meat served the way you like – my niece was not disappointed.
We were satisfyingly full by the end of our meal but wanted to linger just a little bit longer with a You’re So Basic Mimosa – the perfect sweet sipper for dessert.
Though not Wakefield locals ourselves, we felt like neighbors from the time we arrived at Phil’s, and the longer we stayed and chatted with Tetzner and waitstaff, we found plenty of reasons to return – not least of all a new summer menu rolling out soon.
