Scratch-made cookie trays, bûche de Noël, gingerbread, and more bringing Christmas cheer

Posted

No matter who you are or what you’re celebrating this month, baked goods from local spots are guaranteed to make the season a little bit sweeter. The lure of the familiar is especially strong during the holiday season, but why not try someplace new for this year’s dessert spread? From festive pies and bûche de Noël to cookie kits and trays, here’s a handful of South County’s bakeries sure to be slinging pastries perfect for entertaining this season. Pro-tip: get your order in early as these treats are going fast.

Carolena’s Italian Bakery

A family-owned business taking a page from passed down Italian cookbooks, Carolena’s carries traditional pizzelles and cannolis, along with their almost-too-cute-to-eat Eggnog Christmas Tree Cupcakes. Pre-order online for a selection of fanciful pies, cheesecakes (including candy cane peppermint and candied cherry flavors), and an assortment of gluten-free pastries and desserts (even tiramisu!). Cousins Bakery

Warning: Lu-Anne Cox’s cookie trays assembled with care in foil pie-pans may trigger feelings of nostalgia. Think trees with green sprinkles, Italian wedding cookies, red and green M&Ms, chocolate crinkle cookies, and other colorful morsels, all scratch-made at this mom-and-pop shop near URI that also takes orders for specialty cakes, pies, tarts, and more. Slice of Heaven

A cafe and pastry shop by the sea, Slice of Heaven is adored by locals for good reason and a great destination for a quick cuppa and snack to break up a holiday shopping jaunt. Though their menu isn’t yet confirmed at press time, December also means a case filled with fresh-made seasonal cakes, pies, and tarts perfect to bring home for entertaining. Jamestown

Sophie’s Brewhouse

Along with a warm chai latte, Sophie’s Brewhouse has its pastry cases well stocked with seasonal sweets this month. Inquire about placing orders for assorted cookie trays, pies, and more. If last year is any indication, watch for hot cocoa bombs (chocolate confections for melting in warm milk), sugar cookie decorating kits, and mason jar mixes, all perfect for whole-family fun. Exeter

Sweet Althea’s

This bakeshop is open seven days a week to satiate all your confectionary cravings. Curate your own custom tray of scratch-made sugar shortbreads in holiday shapes, chocolate-dipped Oreos or pretzels, and more, or wow guests with a snowman or reindeer cake, plus cupcakes and pies. Cake pops from Sweet Althea’s are almost too pretty to eat (but you’ll be happy when you do!). Wakefield,

Sweet Cakes Bakery and Cafe

Behind the case of this unassuming SK cafe you’ll find the linchpin to any Christmas party: bûche de Noël. Sweet Cakes’ take on this chocolate sponge cake roll features vanilla buttercream filling and a chocolate sour cream frosting on the outside, adorned with meringue mushrooms and holly. Cookie boxes and gingerbread kits – complete with people, piping bags of icing, and add-ons – will also make an appearance this year. Wakefield
