Weekend Best Bets

Make the most out of Father's Day weekend for both you and dad

Posted

Congratulations! You survived another week of the 9-5 daily grind, and now there’s nothing left to do but let your hair down and enjoy the weekend. Unsure what to do? Don’t fret, we’ve got you covered. Take a look at what’s in store over the next three days.

ALL WEEKEND

The Block Island Music Festival is a six-day showcase at Captain Nick’s Rock n’ Roll Bar featuring some of the most talented and undiscovered artists around the Northeast. Be sure to check out the festival schedule to see who’s performing.

Friday marks the start of Rhode Island Pride Fest in Providence. Major events throughout the weekend include the largest GLBT Marketplace and Business Exposition in the region; a main stage line-up of entertainment featuring headliner Thea Austin, lead singer of the chart topping pop group SNAP; and, of course, the Illuminated Night-Time Pride Parade through downtown.

FRIDAY

WBRU's Friday Night Concert Series at Waterplace Park continues this week with local boys Torn Shorts, a semi-finalist in this year's Rock Hunt.

Thinking of having a ladies night?  Well, look what we have here: the Thunder From Down Under makes its way to the Twin River Event Center. If you couldn't get enough of the movie Magic Mike, why not see the real thing in person?

Attention hip-hop lovers: the MGM Grand at Foxwoods has The Old School Hip Hop Jam with headlining acts Epmd, DMX, Naughty By Nature and Rakim to name a few.

SATURDAY

Newport’s Sunset Music Series brings Willie Nelson & Family to the waterfront on Saturday at the Yachting Center. Willie is celebrating his 80th birthday the best way he knows how: on the road again.

Get a taste of the first ever East Bay Beer Festival, featuring Rhode Island breweries in a beautiful waterfront location, right alongside the Blount Clam Shack on historic Water Street in Warren.  This is the perfect event for all you beer lovers, or even a great place to take dad to kick-off Father’s Day. The event includes live music, raffles and live brewing demonstrations.

Spend Saturday Savoring Federal Hill. Chef Cindy Salvato will guide this "Insider's Food Tour", where you'll learn the history, meet the chefs, savor the samples, and get exclusive behind the scenes tours – all while enjoying a little wine.

SUNDAY

What better way to spend Father’s Day than Sailing Newport? Take dad on a leisurely cruise around Newport Harbor featuring food and beer. Fathers sail half-price.

If dad prefers to be a bit more active, take him to Norman Bird Sanctuary in Middletown for Father's Day Hiking and Hamburgers. You'll hike the scenic trails, then enjoy a cookout. The whole family is welcome, and dads are free.

The Providence Flea is an upscale urban flea market along the Providence River Greenway on South Water Street. It runs every Sunday from through August 25, 10am - 4pm, rain or shine. You can browse through vintage finds, art, fashion, antiques, local crafts, curiosities and more. Admission is free.
