Theater Season Heats Up

Enjoy a variety of dramatic offerings during the summer months


As we enter the heat of the summer, cool down in one of these local the- atres to watch a variety of high-energy and humorous productions. There is a medley of musicals and revival revues, but if you’re looking for something sans the spectacle, there are a bunch of original comedies performing this month as well. Check out what these five theatres have up their sleeve.

Granite Theatre
Always a Bridesmaid is the hilarious story of four friends who made a promise on their senior prom to be in each other’s weddings, at all costs. Starting June 20, watch these bewildered bridesmaids 30 years later as they navigate through the turbulences of careers, waistlines and matrimony, while realizing the power of friendship. $12-$20. June 20, 22, 26-29. 2pm & 8pm show times.

The Granite Theatre is also experimenting with some role reversal for their From Stage to Screen and Back Again - A Musical Revue. They will be turning classic stage musicals into films, while turning famous movies into musical productions. Bring your favorite drama enthusiasts to see who can recognize the most hits as you listen to a medley of songs from shows ranging from Show Boat to Phantom of the Opera from June 1-8. 2pm & 8pm show times. $15-25. Theatre by the Sea
Step back in time to experience the infamous Rat Pack in Sandy Hackett’s Rat Pack Show. Theatre by the Sea is celebrating 50 years of this famous gang of musicians and charmers, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Joey Bishop by recreating their witty performance. From June 4-22, listen to classics like “Volare” and “New York, New York,” as well as original songs made exclusively for the show, created by comedian Buddy Hackett. This suave bunch, clad in fedoras and pinstripe suits, will put you on a time machine back to a ‘50s nightclub as they serenade and surprise you in this night of music and comedy. Theatre by the Sea will be performing another throwback his month. The electrifying musical Grease, will be playing from June 25 through mid-July. This family-friendly classic will feature the high-energy song and dance from the Broadway production and hit movie. 2pm, 4pm, 7pm & 8pm show times. June 25-30. $39-$62. Contemporary Theater
This tongue-in-cheek satire, The Rescue by local playwright Ron Maine will have the audience howl- ing over how convoluted cultural norms and modern politics can be during this calamitous journey to the fictional country of Lesser Mon- draga. Watch this lackey, sent on a fools’ errand from the government see the world with new eyes while also learning the value of goats. June 20-21, 26-29. 7pm. $15-20. Ocean State Theatre Company
For three weeks starting June 4, The Ocean State Theatre Company is running the Broadway musical based on a true story about the country music legend, Patsy Cline. Aside from some down-home country humor and many touching scenes, Always... Patsy Cline features 27 of Patsy’s unforgettable hits. This heartwarming musical tells the story about the love letters that were exchanged between Patsy and her friend Louis Segar, to whom she always signed, “love always...
