Bocce: If it’s summer in Providence, people are playing bocce. Join the courts at Grant’s Block and Spruce Street on Federal Hill or the courts on Dexter Park on the West Side. Remember to bring your own balls. Outdoor chess is also common.
Bumper Cars at the Providence Rink: Why let a perfectly good skating rink go to waste all summer? The Providence Rink at Kennedy Plaza transforms into kid-friendly mayhem when the cars starts slamming each other.
Gondola Rides: All summer long, we see these elegant watercraft glide down Providence waterways. If you don’t mind the stares, a romantic, 40-minute trip is pretty affordable, and they continue all the way through November.

WaterFire: This sacred Providence communion attracts visitors from around the world, who gather by the rivers and watch the soul-warming glow of 100 braziers. The food vendors, buskers, and general people-watching are worth a full evening.

Storytime + Art in the Park: The Downtown Providence Parks Conservancy is brimming with kids’ activities, including storytime, art activities, the Imagination Center, and an open-air reading room. July 9-September 24.

Concert Under the Elms: The Rhode Island Historical Society brings an eclectic lineup of performers to the John Brown House lawn on the East Side every Thursday night. June 20-August 1.
Burnside Music Series and Beer Garden: Burnside Park is already a lovely place to visit and hip spot to convene with friends. Add top-notch music and a beer garden hosted by Trinity, and you may find yourself there every week. July 12-August 30.
FRIDAYS
Food Truck Fridays: Music, food trucks, and an air-conditioned merry-go-round. Eat anything you want and enjoy some late-afternoon sun at the Roger Williams Park Zoo’s Carousel Village, all the way to the last days of summer. Through September 27.

RI PrideFest: Providence is loud, proud – and true. This all-day bash celebrates LGBTQ communities with the theme “Live Your Truth.” Enjoy live music, food, vendors, and the spectacular Illuminated Night Parade.

Fourth of July Riverboat Tour: If you want the best seat for the fireworks show over India Point Park, you’ll definitely want to reserve a spot on the Providence River Boat Company’s Fourth of July Tour.

Cape Verdean Independence Day Festival: This annual festival commemorates the island’s independence from Portugal and also showcases traditional food, art, and music from noon until sundown India Point Park.

AS220 Estival Festival: AS220 is taking a break from staging its annual, Foo Fest and instead will bring 20 of its best Foo Fest bands to its Main Stage and Black Box Theater for a sonic fundraiser.

FringePVD: Appropriately the 2019 FringePVD festival – a celebration of edgy performance art and local culture – will be held on the fringes of downtown Providence. Most performances are to be held in Olneyville.

Flickers International Film Festival: This week-long festival draws film submissions from around the world, any of which could qualify for an Academy Award.

Summer Pops: There is no holier ground than the Temple of Music at the Roger Williams Park, as this is where the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a free concert.

NecronomiCon: Providence, aka “the birthplace of weird” and also of macabre author H.P. Lovecraft, will host a conference devoted to Lovecraftian fiction.
August 24
Brew at the Zoo: The state’s largest outdoor beer festival takes place the Roger Williams Park Zoo, sort of like a sudsy safari. Sample 170 beers from 80-plus local and national brewers.
