Sons of Liberty Pumpkin Spice Whiskey Is Anything But Basic

Local spirits make for an extra-special Thanksgiving

One of the best things about the fall is the proliferation of pumpkin-flavored everything. While some of them are great – I’ve made pumpkin whoopee pies with bourbon-cream cheese frosting, and pumpkin bread pudding to great acclaim for Turkey Day – some of them are terrible. Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte, I’m looking at you… and your Twitter handle. One of the best pumpkin iterations is made right here in South Kingstown: Sons of Liberty Pumpkin Spice Whiskey.

How good is it? SOL Pumpkin Spice was voted World’s Best Flavored Whiskey at the 2014 Whisky Magazine World Whiskies Awards in London. The brew has fresh roasted pumpkin flavors, with notes of cinnamon, allspice, clove, vanilla and sweet orange. But, with great flavor comes great responsibility.

This release is hard to find, despite the fact that SOL is making significantly more of it than they did in 2013 (and using 30,000lbs of pumpkins from Carpenter’s Farm as opposed to last year’s 4,000lbs). Your best bet is to head directly to the distillery for a tour and tasting, and then take home a bottle for yourself.
