Revisiting the mid-Twentieth Century with Brooklyn and Trumbo

Posted

Avon Cinema
Colm Tóibín's award-winning coming-of-age novel Brooklyn comes to the big screen. Starring Saoirse Ronan and Domhnall Gleeson, Brooklyn is about Eilis and her journey to and life in America. Along the way she falls in love, makes friends, and educates herself in order to make a living in the land of opportunity. Written by another award-winning author, Nick Hornby, Brooklyn premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews, with praises ranging from the outstanding performances to sheer emotional heft.

Cable Car Cinema
Legendary screenwriter and alleged Commie scum Dalton Trumbo gets the bio treatment with Jay Roach's Trumbo. Bryan Cranston portrays the titular writer as he undermines the Hollywood blacklist, manages the politics of the entertainment industry, and comes out with two Academy Awards under pseudonyms. With a supporting cast that includes Diane Lane, Louis C.K., and Helen Mirren, Trumbo is an honorable tribute to a true Hollywood iconoclast.

Jane Pickens Theater
Brooklyn will also be playing at the Jane Pickens Theater this weekend.
