When a cool autumn breeze whisks over the sea, Rhode Islanders know that it’s time for the Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Festival in Newport. Expect fresh oysters, clam chowder, stuffed quahogs (or “stuffies,” as we call them), lobster rolls, fish tacos, scallops, fried calamari, and more all along the wharf under colorful tents.
Whalers Brewing Company will shell out ice-cold beer to go with your “bounty of the sea,” and other venders serve smoothies and kettle corn to satisfy a sweet tooth.
The festivities are set to the soundtrack of The Copacetics, a reggae and ska band, and Cee Cee and The Riders, playing soul and blues. Catch the live cooking demonstrations at the Eating with the Ecosystem boat and tent on Market Square. Meanwhile, make sure you stop by and see The Nature Conservancy of Rhode Island to find out how best to dispose of your trash, shells, recyclables, and compostables and reduce your impact on the water. Also be sure to buy a drink, as the bar proceeds benefit the Oliver Hazard Perry, a 200-foot education vessel. October 13-14, Newport
