Yoga Sanctuary on the Saugatucket

Wakefield's open-air classroom honors the memory of a special little girl

Posted

Nestled in a natural oasis in the heart of Wakefield is a peaceful place that honors a special person. Sarah “Sari” McClarnon spent some of her best days playing along the Saugatucket River. When Sari lost her eight-year battle with childhood cancer in 2005, those who knew her knew this would be a special spot to remember her.

Today, Sari’s Sanctuary is a covered outdoor classroom on the Saugatucket River intended for the use of teachers and students at Wakefield Elementary School and the entire Wakefield community.

As it’s the perfect place for a peaceful practice, yoga classes will be offered at the Sanctuary two days each week this summer. Established yoga instructor Sarah Bell will teach a class on Saturday mornings – registration and payment can be completed through the South Kingstown Parks and Recreation Department’s website. In addition, local yoga instructor Rebecca Briggs teaches classes on Tuesdays at 7-8am, 9:30-11am and 6-7:30pm. The cost for Rebecca’s class is a pay-what-you-can scale from $5-$20.

Sari’s Sanctuary is a beautiful space, open on four sides and the river is teeming with turtles, fish, birds and other wildlife. For more information about use of the Sanctuary, contact the South Kingstown Parks and Recreation Department at 789-9301.
