Piping hot Asian food, served speedily and garnished with herbs home-grown inside the restaurant. Sa-Tang both is a typical Asian restaurant, and it isn’t. The laid-back, unflappable vibe with spare décor, medium booths and a couple of lunchtime regulars evokes the thought of strip mall Asian eateries all the world over. But the food, if you believe the regulars, tastes much better than just “typical”. It’ll blow your socks off.

Just a couple of entrees: Pad Thai, Panang Curry, Asparagus-Ginger Stir Fry and Hot Basil. What sets these dishes apart? The sauce on the Pad Thai is clearer and less muddled than the cloying sweet-and-sour found on ordinary strip mall Pad Thai. Fans describe the curry as “rich” and deeply satisfying, and it comes in four flavors – Red Curry, Green Curry, Yellow Curry, Panang Curry – each with a different kick, though the Green Curry has been called the strongest. The Hot Basil has been cooked with just the right amount of heat, which is lucky. A little more and you wouldn’t taste the basil, slightly less and it wouldn’t deserve the name.

Noodle and rice dishes come next. The Mango Fried Rice, with the requisite carrot, egg and tomato plus the newer raisins and mango, has won a few loyal fans in Warwick. Also check out the Sa-Tang Fried Rice (the original recipe), Spicy Basil Fried Rice (bell pepper, bird’s eye chili sauce) and the “All Green” Fried Rice, with snow pea, celery, string beans and other greens. Sa-Tang isn’t afraid to get more serious with its dishes, offering the Thai favorite, Tamarind Duck, as well as the Japanese Chicken Katsu and the more Chinese-inspired Sesame Duck. You may as well add a side of Coconut Rice, Jasmine Rice or “Healthy Brown” Rice, with a dessert of Mango Sticky Rice or Sticky “Kha Niao Man” Rice with Coconut Ice Cream. That’s Thai for delicious.
