Make a spark at a table for two

Posted

Spain is at its most romantic in the summer when you can sit in the flower-filled courtyard near the crackling outdoor fireplace. But all that warmth and charm moves indoors this time of year when you can dine on sensational food in stylish surroundings. Wonderful dinners for two are on the menu: Jefe (sautéed tenderloin with artichoke hearts and mushrooms in a Rioja wine sauce) and Paella Valenciana (shrimp, sea scallops, clams, mussels, calamari, chicken and chorizo over saffron rice). European archways help set the mood, and prized tables for two are set next to a gentle tiled waterfall on the far wall in the main dining room.

Besos Kitchen and Cocktails – besos is the Spanish word for kisses – just might be the most romantic restaurant in southern Rhode Island. It’s certainly the most visually stimulating with interior textures and ultramodern chandeliers that simply fascinate the senses. The extensive tapas menu is meant for sharing. Taquitos and bocadillos prepare your palate for the Spicy Salmon with papaya passion fruit chutney and the Pan-Seared Scallops strawberry glaze. Dining here can be a sweet experience with honey, bananas, coconut milk, ginger cherry compote and sweet plantains as key ingredients. With candles aglow throughout this intriguing restaurant, this is the go-to place for rekindling the magic feeling of love.

Under new ownership, Simpatico Jamestown (formerly Trattoria Simpatico) will reopen in March with new dining areas and an updated menu. A new front deck will offer a water view of the Pell-Newport Bridge, with its white lights twinkling at night. Little visual surprises are being brought to fruition by local craftsmen. Vintage wine closets are being installed, and an intimate Chart Room bar area is in the works. A lush terraced courtyard will be the place to be this summer, when this restaurant has always been the most romantic place to dine. This popular island restaurant will be better than ever come springtime.

There’s a new girl in town. It’s a restaurant called Ella’s Fine Food and Drink that everyone is falling in love with, and with good reason. This coastal community has embraced the creative menu, which features whimsical dishes from Florida (Tuna Tacos with Papaya Relish) as well as tried and true New England fare (Filet Mignon with Red Flannel Hash). The side dish of Double Truffle Lobster Mac and Cheese just begs to be shared. Fans can’t decide which is better, the extraordinary food or the outstanding service. The main dining area is cool and modern. For a true romantic experience, head to the warm and cozy bar and lounge.
