July 2020

Posted

We’re on the hunt for Rhody Gems! Every neighborhood has that secret, hidden, cool and unusual, or hole-in-the-wall spot that locals love. Email or tag us on social media using #RhodyGem to suggest yours, and we might just feature it!

What it is:

Housing bestsellers, classic titles, and children’s collections in a quaint historical site, Books on the Pond supplies an idyllic reading atmosphere to complement the book shopping experience.

Where to find it:

Scenic Charlestown is the new home of this cozy bookshop, its new incarnation inhabiting a trio of barns with a patio garden just off the Narrow Lane exit heading north.

What makes it a Rhody Gem?

In each building, find book collections in all genres, along with artisan wares and educational games, all curated with care by owner Alexandra Lehmann who keeps both her adult and children readers in mind. Seeking authentic human connection in this literary hub, Lehmann also hosts writing classes and author readings in the red barn, which is decorated with paintings and photography. July brings the return of book events, with spaced-out seating for safety, so check online for the schedule. Meanwhile, the new outdoor reading patio is perfect for social distancing under a trellis, inviting bookish conversation, quality time with dogs, and, of course, reading. Lehmann says, “We consider ourselves lucky because our customers, teachers, and writers are also friends and neighbors.”
