Imago Foundation for the Arts will launch a new, public speaker series called “Artists Speak” at 7 p.m. September 13 with a talk by Annu Palakunnathu Matthew, photo-based artist, MacDowell Fellow, and University of Rhode Island (URI) Art Professor and Director of the URI Center for the Humanities. The event will be held at IMAGO Gallery, 36 Market Street, Warren, and is free and open to the public.

The “Artists Speak” series will feature presentations by four established Rhode Island artists who will present their artwork and tell the stories of how their creative lives and careers unfolded, enriching our communities in unexpected ways. The series aims to heighten public understanding of how the arts connect to building community.

This activity is made possible in part by a grant from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (RISCA), through an appropriation by the Rhode Island General Assembly and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Other funding is provided through the Rhode Island Legislative Grant Program, BankNewport and the Jay Barry Cultural Arts Foundation.

Palakunnathu Matthew’s work has been widely exhibited in national and international venues and will be featured in the upcoming 2018 Kochi-Muziris Biennale. Her work has also been featured at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, and has been supported by fellowships from the Fulbright Program, John Gutmann Trust, Society for Photographic Education, MacColl Johnson fund, and the Rhode Island State Council of the Arts.

The other three speakers include:

• Howard Newman, painter, sculptor, art restorer, and inventor, on October 4th

• Mary Healey Jamiel, 2018 RISCA Film & Video fellow, documentary filmmaker, and Professor in Communication Studies and Film/Media at the University of Rhode Island, on November 15th

• Willy Heeks, nationally recognized abstract expressionist painter and award-winning National Endowment for the Arts Fellow, on December 6th

All the talks will begin at 7 pm at IMAGO Gallery, 36 Market Street, Warren, and are open to the public free of charge. Each speaker will deliver a 60-minute talk/multi-media presentation followed by a 30-minute Q & A session. IFA strongly encourages student artists, emerging and mid-career artists, as well as those interested in the arts to attend. A video and monograph will be created for public enrichment following the lecture series.

IFA operates IMAGO Gallery at 36 Market Street in Warren and supports community involvement in a wide range of cultural activities related to the arts. Regular gallery hours are Thursday, 4 – 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday, noon to 8 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visit www.imagofoundation4art.org to learn more about IFA and its mission.
