If You Build It, They Will Sip

Apponaug Brewery opens in historic Warwick building

Posted

Last July, Apponaug Brewing Co. published a post on Facebook – a photo of a large window overlooking the Pawtuxet River. “Walls. Windows. Wiring,” it read, adding: “Now we wait on water.” For months, Apponaug fans watched the renovation process unfold, as founders Tamara McKenney and Kris Waugh documented their visit to Four Star Farms, the installation of a 6,000-pound fermenter, and the shipment of Apponaug T-shirts and caps. On October 9, they announced their grand opening.

Now, only a few months later, Apponaug has become a destination for craft beer fans. Apponaug is the primary commercial tenant in the Pontiac Mills building, which is known for its upscale lofts; McKenney spent 12 months looking for precisely the right location for their future business. More than just a beer brewer, the Apponaug kitchen is also a bustling restaurant, where Chef Marc Alexander serves up flatbreads, tacos, and sliders. The taps change regularly, so you can sample the handiwork of brewer Justin Tisdale. When spring arrives, patrons get to chill outside by the water, and maybe catch sight of a turtle or two.

For folks who watched the project evolve on social media, visiting Apponaug redeems a long-awaited dream. For those who’ve never heard of it, the brewery is a welcome addition to the Warwick beer-making scene.
