Good news for residents of Washington County: South County Trail in East Greenwich is emerging as a medical hub. These aren’t just ancillary, part-time offices to their Providence counterparts – they’re full-service facilities. No longer will you be forced to drive “all the way” to Providence, find and pay for a parking space at Rhode Island Hospital, and then figure out where to go once you’re there.
From a business perspective, opening medical offices in East Greenwich makes sense because more people live in the southern part of the state. According to the US Census Bureau, Rhode Island’s total population increased by about 5.6 percent between 1980 and 2018. In contrast, Washington County grew by 36 percent for the same period. David Paller, chief financial officer at University Orthopedics, Inc., cites population shift as a factor in the practice’s decision to expand there. “In 2017, we relocated to a larger space on South County Trail to better serve our growing patient population,” he says. “We are currently constructing a parking garage at this location to better accommodate our needs and provide the best patient experience possible.”
University Surgical Associates is increasing its presence, as well. The organization held a grand opening celebration at its 1407 South County Trail location on September 17 and the Center for Breast Care at University Surgical Associates is one of the on-site practices. Dr. Theresa Graves, the center’s director and an East Greenwich resident, is excited about the new office and what it will mean for patients. She cites the immediate proximity of imaging services and medical oncology, among other specialties, as a convenience and benefit for patients who can receive much of their care closer to home. “With a patient that has a breast cancer diagnosis, for instance, I can evaluate them initially in my office, bring them to the multidisciplinary clinic at Rhode Island Hospital and operate there, and then bring the follow-up care back to their community,” she explains.
And, the parking is free.
