Taste Test

All Treats and No Tricks

Terrifying our taste buds the best way possible

Posted

Let’s be honest. Halloween is a fun time of year to dress up as something ghoulish, nerdy or just plain silly. But we all know what it’s really about: the sweets. With the plethora of traditional and designer bakeries in the neighborhood, we tasted cupcakes to whet our appetite for the upcoming festivities.

Sweet Cakes Bakery

“It tastes like fall with frosting on top,” said of one of our staff members after tasting the pumpkin cupcake with mascarpone filling. While the aroma was divine, the cake itself was moist, not too dense and the frosting was light and not too sugary. It had all the spicy aromas you’d look for in a fall treat, no tricks. 1227 Kingstown Road, Wakefield, 789-5420.

Scrumptions
Frosting fans rejoice. These spice cupcakes with apple mousse on the inside and cinnamon buttercream on top was delicately balanced and choc full of flavor. The buttercream, however, stole the show. It was delicious, light and made with super highquality butter. The apple mousse on the inside was even lighter, tangy and actually tasted like apple cider. It was the small details that elevated this cupcake to delicious heights. 5600 Post Road, East Greenwich, 884-0844.

Trixie's Bakery & Cafe
Get ready to channel your inner child with these not-too-sweet cupcakes just like mom used to make: a simple take on a classic cupcake that evoked joy and nostalgia. The cake and seasonally-colored frosting weren’t too sweet and were even topped with jimmies. This treat is the perfect bring along to any kids Halloween bash. 105 Franklin Street, Westerly, 596-5385.

Sweet Althea's
These artfully decorated chocolate cupcakes with a caramel center and topped with super sweet frosting really hit a sugary note. “These are a kid’s dream cupcake,” remarked one of our staff members. From the cute little touches to the last satisfying bite, these left a spooktacular impression. 406D Main Street, Wakefield. 932-9473.
