Green Dry Cleaning in South County

Earth Friendly services meet wordly goods in Wyoming

Posted

When Mama Earth co-owners Jennifer and Melissa opened their premium cloth diaper service in 2010 (now a separate business from the green, dry cleaning), they knew immediately that they would eventually branch out and embrace other environmentally-friendly opportunities. Their goal: to enhance the lives of others while being kind to the planet, because they saw how effective using natural detergents and energy efficient equipment could be.

Seeing what a positive impact their diaper service alone had made, the two delved into researching effective green alternatives to dry cleaning and discovered that there are very few earth-friendly dry cleaners not only in Rhode Island but across the country. Their passion for sustainable practices that are cutting edge, safe and non-toxic lead to the opening of their eco-friendly dry cleaning business and store in Wyoming in January, easily accessible off of Route 138. They are considered a green dry cleaner because they do not use the common solvent used in a standard dry cleaning business: perchloroethylene (or perc, for short). Perc is a synthetic, volatile organic compound (VOC) that can pose health risks to humans and animals and is a potential threat to the environment.

“As parents and business owners, we want to contribute in any small way to keep the earth and all the people living on this planet as healthy as possible,” shares an exuberant Jen. Their attitude and earth-friendly slogan sums up their passion for their new business: “At Mama Earth, our business is small, but we dream big.”

Mama Earth customers are greeted by a storefront boasting vibrant eggplant-colored walls along with delicately draped imported fabrics from one of their excursions to Bali or Bangkok. An intimate seating arrangement complete with a cozy fireplace and easy-listening music is also part of the atmosphere where it’s not unusual to see Jen sitting and chatting with her customers from everything to stains, Earth Day or the joys and frustrations of raising a two-yearold. They even have a welcoming, adorable play station for their customers’ children, including a multistory, all-natural dollhouse with some fun farm animals. This relaxed atmosphere is inviting for those who wish to hang out a bit but equally as efficient for busy customers who would like to get in and out quickly.

In addition to green dry cleaning, Mama Earth also specializes in custom, green shirt laundering, wool rugs, draperies, suede and leather products. They have a quick turnaround with reasonable prices. And yes, everything is recycled at Mama Earth, including the plastic garment bags.

Mama Earth customers can also enjoy a store filled with breathtaking pictures, videos and one-of-a-kind handcrafted products from their many trips across the world. They are committed to helping the global artists and to fair trade.

“At Mama Earth we design our products to balance the mind, nurture the body and lift the spirit,” shares a passionate Jen. The unique inventory that arrives continually throughout the year includes colorful African market baskets, hip and earthy wall hangings, handcarved lanterns, wooden Buddha statues that are said to add positive energy vibes to your home, beaded jewelry, sweet children’s furniture, easy-breezy organic clothing perfect for summer wear and all-natural skin care products. They also carry inventory online.
