Pack a blanket and join in the picnic

Rhode Island is on a quest to educate its public about the availability of local foods and their ingredients, as a means of providing the state with a longer lasting food supply. Chef’s Collaborative, a nonprofit organization in Rhode Island, is teaming up with “farm-to-fork” chefs across the state as they host the 3rd annual Rhode Island Farm Picnic Autumn Harvest on Sunday, October 14, to help promote their cause. The fundraiser will take place from 4-7pm at Schartner Farms in Exeter.

Star chefs from across the state will host the event, serving locally sourced, homestyle barbeque-themed items along with locally made beer and wine. Chef Derek Wagner of Nicks on Broadway in Providence says, it’s “an event that truly celebrates all of the things that we as cooks, farmers, artisans and food lovers are so passionate about: hand-crafted food and drink, the farm, the fall harvest in New England and our sense of community.”

The picnic is part of a larger, nationwide movement called National Food Day, an effort to promote locally based food consumption. Attendees of the Rhode Island Farm Picnic are encouraged to bring a blanket. The event is $55 for adults and $25 for children ages 8-18. Children ages eight and under get in for free. Tickets can be purchased online.
