Avon Cinema
This week at the Avon offers daily showings of Woody Allen’s Irrational Man. Abe Lucas (Joaquin Phoenix) is a tormented philosophy professor at a small town college who’s hit rock bottom, and suddenly finds himself becoming involved with two women: a lonely professor (Parker Posey) and his best student (Emma Stone). Filming for this flick took place all over Rhode Island last summer, so you won’t want to miss the opportunity to see some familiar scenery on the big screen.

Friday and Saturday nights bring Montage of Heck, the acclaimed in-depth documentary that follows the life of late musician Kurt Cobain from his childhood in Washington to his success and downfall with the grunge band Nirvana. Filmmaker Brian Morgan uses material from the Cobains’ personal archives to create what Rolling Stone calls “the most intimate rock doc ever.”

Cable Car Cinema
Opening Friday at the Cable Car is Listen to Me Marlon, an extraordinary documentary on Marlon Brando, allowing you deep access into the actor’s life guided by Brando himself. According to Vanity Fair, it “is a compelling documentary about Marlon Brando compiled entirely from private audio tapes the actor recorded at home, in business meetings, during hypnosis, in therapy, and during press interviews.” No talking heads, no interviewees, just Brando. It’s only playing at the Cable Car for a week, so don’t miss it.

Jane Pickens Theater
You can also catch Irrational Man at the Jane Pickens Theater in Newport for an extra special movie-going experience – one of the scenes in the movie was filmed right outside the theater!

Jane Pickens will also be screening The Impressionists & The Man Who Made Them, on Sunday, August 16 at 12:30pm, a film on a new exhibition that focuses on 19th century Parisian art collector Paul Durand-Ruel. This eagerly anticipated international exhibition is possibly the most comprehensive exploration of the Impressionists in history.
