Avon Cinema
Playing through this week is Phoenix, the new film from acclaimed director Christian Petzold. A spellbinding mystery of identity, illusion, and deception unfolds against the turmoil of post-World War II Germany. Nelly (Nina Hoss), a German-Jewish nightclub singer, has survived a concentration camp, but with her face disfigured by a bullet wound so her former husband doesn’t recognize her. A well-crafted, Hitchcock-like mystery unfolds as Nelly enters a dangerous game of duplicity and disguise.


Cable Car Cinema
Playing through Thursday is Best of Enemies, a documentary about the legendary series of nationally televised debates in 1968 between liberal Gore Vidal and conservative William Buckley Jr.

The can’t-miss animation piece of the year comes to Cable Car this Friday, Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet. Timeless verses from one of the most popular volumes of poetry ever written have been given enchanting new form in this painterly cinematic adventure about freedom and the power of human expression. The film features the vocal talents of Liam Neeson, Salma Hayek and more and has “chapters” from different animation directors from around the world.

You can catch Woody Allen’s Irrational Man until August 27. Scenes were shot all over Rhode Island, including one filmed right outside the Jane Pickens Theater!

Inconceivable! Young Life Newport presents Rob Reiner’s 1987 classic The Princess Bride on August 27 at 1pm. Robin Wright and Cary Elwes star in this hilarious and quotable fairytale adventure that’s fun for the whole family.

Opening Friday is The End of the Tour, the story of the five-day interview between Rolling Stone reporter and novelist David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg) and acclaimed novelist David Foster Wallace (Jason Segel) that took place just after the 1996 publication of Wallace’s groundbreaking epic novel, Infinite Jest. An intense relationship develops between the two writers as the days go by, and Segel and Eisenberg reveal great depths of emotion in their performances.
