Style Sherpa Gaelen Abt puts together an on-trend look for a night on the town.

A “life long style junkie,” Style Sherpa Gaelen Abt has been honing her skills since childhood and is now a certified Image Consultant, working with men and women to create styles that are truly their own. She’s also a writer for On Trend Magazine and has a style blog. “I’m not a big fan of rules when it comes to fashion,” she says. “My style philosophy is more about keeping an open mind. Style isn’t about following trends; it’s being true to yourself which in turn makes you more confident. Confidence is always in style.” TheStyleSherpa.net.

How did you put together this look?
When putting an outfit together, I strive for balance in the look. The lace dress and denim shoe offset each other, keeping this look appropriate for an elegant dinner or listening to music at a favorite bar. Another key factor when picking an outfit is the personality of the person wearing it. The woman I picture in this look is outgoing and fun loving. (Although I could morph this into a lovely look for a more classic style woman. I’d change out the jacket for a longer car coat in a similar color palate, add patent leather pumps and pearls and a solid color clutch.)

What would you change to make this a work outfit?
To take this outfit from night to day, I would remove the jacket, add a chunky colorful bib necklace and a larger leather tote. If you are office bound, toss on a shaped blazer or leather jacket.

Tell us your favorite fall trend.
There was so much pattern, color and texture on the runways for fall and nothing makes me happier. This truly is a great time in fashion. So many different decades are being channeled by designers that it’s easy to find ways of keeping your look current, while staying true to who you are. Adding a cool pair of jeans with some interesting detail is top on my list. Maybe a ‘70s-inspired pair in a wider flare and patch pockets in front, or perhaps a fun metallic finish or details up the side. Anything that isn’t your basic jean. An off-the-shoulder top is another perfect piece to add to your wardrobe.

What advice do you give your clients?

Let go of the rules. All those “rules” from our past are pretty much gone. I find once a client realizes that it’s okay to wear things in a different way, it completely changes how they approach getting dressed. That includes mixing patterns, which is probably the easiest way to make your look more current. Don’t be afraid to try different combinations. It usually takes two to three times of seeing yourself in something different before you get used to it. You don’t have to wear it out the first time.
