Summer Bucket List

5. Go to a Festival

Because summer offers so many reasons to celebrate

Posted

This summer, more than others, has a distinctly nautical theme to it. People are already buzzing over the Tall Ships returning to Newport from July 5-9, but the celebration lasts longer than that in South County. On June 21, head to the sea wall in Narragansett for the South County Regatta. July 27-28 sees the return of Narragansett’s Blessing of the Fleet, which includes a road race, seafood festival and actual blessing of ships. If you’re more of an air person than a sea one, check out the RI National Guard Air Show from June 16-17 in North Kingstown.

Arts festivals are another beloved local tradition, and there are quite a few to choose from. Make it a point to check out at least one this season. Narragansett’s Fine Art Festival takes place from June 23-24 this year. Wickford Village brings its Art Festival back for an astonishing 50th year from July 7-8. In Kingston, the Chamber Music Festival returns to URI from July 18-29. From August 7-12, film takes center stage as the Rhode Island International Film Festival returns to movie houses all over the state. See hundreds of independent and short films from all over the world – and then see them again when they’re nominated for Oscars next year. Wakefield’s Arts and Entertainment Festival, which includes arts and crafts as well as live music, comedy, theater and dance performances, happens August 10-18.
