When the weather is this beautiful, you want to be outside as much as possible. Luckily, you’re not alone. Grab your beach chair – or a blanket and a picnic basket – and head to an outdoor concert or play. Nothing beats watching the sunset to a live soundtrack on a sultry summer night.
Wilcox Park in Westerly is worth a visit at any time, but sees several kinds of festive gatherings in the summer months. On June 23, the park hosts the 32nd Annual Summer Pops Concert by the Chorus of Westerly, which includes artillery demonstrations and fireworks with the concert. In July, the Colonial Theater stages its annual Shakespeare in the Park performances. This year, Macbeth runs from July 11-29. On June 17, July 25 and August 24, the park hosts Town Band performances.
Starting June 19, Wickford hosts the Tuesday Night Summer Concert Series. Set on the water’s edge on Brown Street, each week hosts a different act, from the Ten Rod Ramblers’ concert series opener to Brass Attack on July 3 and Abbey Rhode on August 7. The series runs through August 14. In July, the North Kingstown Town Beach hosts the Thursday Family Concert Series. Dance with your little ones to the Toe Jam Puppet Band or Vanessa Trien and the Jumping Monkeys, right in the sand.
The granddaddy of summer outdoor concerts is Charlestown’s Rhythm and Roots Festival. Taking place over all three days of Labor Day weekend (August 31-September 2) in Ninigret Park, this Cajun and Zydeco music festival brings in national acts, like this year’s host band, the Pine Leaf Boys, and the Carolina Chocolate Drops – not to mention thousands of attendees.
