Summer Bucket List

10. Take a Staycation

Because you don't need to go far from home to get away

If you’re lucky, you’ve got one big summer trip that you’re looking forward to. Why not think a little more locally to add in more travel? Rhode Island has its own tropical escape that’s just 13 miles offshore. With the majority of the land preserved as wilderness and natural habitats, and the locals’ fierce protection of its beauty and historicity, Block Island is an unspoiled gem in the truest sense. Miles of hiking trails, pristine beaches and historic preservation sites will fill your days. Your nights? Live music, al fresco cocktails on Dodge Street, a pint at the island’s own brewery. And it’s all just a half-hour ride away on the Block Island Ferry.

The other seasonal destination that will cause most locals to say “Oh, I haven’t been there in years” is Watch Hill. This tucked away summer haven boasts the iconic Olympia Tea Room, the country’s oldest carousel and miles of idyllic beaches. To get a taste of how the other half lives – literally – have lunch on the terrace of the Ocean House or dinner at its acclaimed Seasons restaurant.
